GRAND HARBOR TO BAY SPRINGS, BOONVILLE, MS

DAY 141, Sun. Oct 30, 2011
AM FOG  PM SUNNY COOL
DEP. GRAND HARBOR 09:30  ARR. BAY SPRINGS MARINA, BOONVILLE, MS 2:30D 36.7 / 2560.7
We planned to leave at 07:30 but awoke to FOG.  By the time it burned off it was 09:30, so much for an early start.  Dean Jones from Kismet came by to discuss departure times and asked me if I saw the tow tied up at the dock.  It was a brand new 75’ Army Core of Eng. boat that was being delivered.  Not being one to miss an opportunity for an interesting experience, I hailed the Capt. and asked for a tour.  I figured the worst he could do was to say no, but I can’t say I was surprised when he told the crew to hold up on casting off and invited us aboard.  We chatted about tows and rivers and what it was like to drive with 16 barges attached, and then we got to see everything f
rom the bridge to the engine room.   We cast off at 09:30 and entered the Tenn. Tombigbee Water Way along with 4 other boats, Salt N Sand, My Way, Kismet, and Mary Frances.  The first few miles were very scenic and then we entered what is called the divide cut.  This is just a manmade ditch connecting two lakes.  It is like the Cape Cod Canal, but only 280’ wide and 25 mi. long.  It’s like cruising the CCC for 3 hours.  Boring!    At 1:00 we entered Bay Springs Lake, cruised across it for 6 mi. and were tied up a Bay Springs Marina by 2:30.
