THE HARLEM R. & A VISIT FROM FRIENDS

Dep. Manhassett 07:55 Ar. Croton 1:40
Distance 40NM (51.4)
Tues. 6/7/2011 Clear, sunny, L68* H80's

We left Manhassett in the company of Peter & Maureen Mezei aboard ther 36' Monk "The Duddon Pilot". The scenery was as great as the weather. Under the Throgs Neck and Whitestone bridges, thru Hell Gate and into the Harlem R. The Harlem was interesting as we passed undercountless bridges and saw all kinds of construction barges, cranes, tugs and trains. All the bridges had clearances between 25' and 150' except for the very last one which was an Amtrack swing bridge with a clearance of 5'. Needless to say we had to wait for an opening but they were very quick and we were on our way up the Hudson R. in 10 mins.
The Hudson at this point was very wide and boring, but we had a 1kn. to 1.3kn. current against us all the way the Half Moon Bay Marina. I added distance travelled at the beginning of this blog, and the actual miles over the bottom are 40, but the distance thru the water was 51.4 as measured by an impeller under the boat. The difference is current against us.

The very busy Harlem River
Jan and Gary Gottlieb were standing at the dock to welcome us and we had a great reunion.  We spent the day talking, mostly about grandkids, did some grocery shopping, went out to dinner at a local cafe called Justen Thyme .

Tomorrow we head for Kingston, NY where we plan to spend 2 nights.
