ON TO ST AUGUSTINE

DDAY 276, FRI, APRIL 20, 2012

DEP. NEW SMYRNA BEACH MARINA 07:34; ARR. HIDDEN HARBOR MARINA, ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (mm780) 3:35.

D. 68.47sm / 4185.19.

The plan for today was to stop at the Marine Land Marina at mm 796, but the weather forecast was for rain and thunderstorms on Fri. night, Sat, and Sun. We didn’t want to be stuck for 3 days at a marina whose only attraction is that it is close to an ocean beach, so we listened to the latest weather forecast and made the decision to go all the way to St. Augustine, another 14 miles and 2 hours. It turned out to be a good decision because the forecast was pretty accurate. In fact, we were about a mile from our destination when the severe weather warning alarm on the marine radio started beeping. We didn’t get any boomers until much later at night, as the severe weather stayed mostly south of us, where we would have been had we stopped. It did make for a long day, especially in this part of FL. The water is wide so there are no details to see, and the channel is not wide enough to let the auto pilot take over for any distance, the result being a long mostly boring cruise. We don’t want excitement, just something interesting to see! Hidden Harbor Marina where we stayed is about 2 miles up a winding, but deep San Sebastian River off the ICW. It’s mostly a live a board marina with few transient slips. The big attraction is price, only $26.50 a night tax and electric included. It is also just a 4 block walk to all the action in St. Augustine.

  1. Hi Joe,

You are stealing my thunder, have many of the same photos. Thanks for the great reviews on Active Captain, they are spot on. Tonight we are at Sunbury Crab Company, live music, great food. How about sending me your Itinerary, so I know where you stopped ahead of time. Hope to stop in and see you in Falmouth.
